Paper Plate Fish

I have to warn you before you continue any farther that I used to be a Nanny and I am now in school for Early Childhood Education. I cannot help but make children's crafts and today you have the privilege to learn how to make one of my favourites. These paper plate fish are so much fun for all ages and can be made in so many different ways.

Here's what you need:
  • Paper Plate
  • Paint
  • Crayons
  • Markers
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Popsicle Stick or Straw
  • Construction Paper
You can grab a lot of different things as well to help you decorate your fish like glitter, stamps, and stickers.

I like to start by painting the paper plate one solid colour. That way there is no white showing through. Some children may prefer to colour it in with crayons or markers. If you do decide to paint I would suggest painting it in the morning and then it should be dry after nap time.

Next is the fun part. Go crazy and decorate! For the first one I took crayons and drew lines down the side of the plate. The next one I glued on dots (made from a hole punch). The last one I decided to dip different round things in paint and stamp them on.

Now for the grown-up part. Take some scissors and cut out a piece of pie. The piece you have cut out is going to be the tail and the whole you made is now the mouth.  Glue the tail in place at the back of the fish.

You could be finished here or you can continue to use your creativeness. I added teeth to one of mine and a fin to another. Another cool touch is to add a baby fish. One little girl who made this fish decided to make it a shark. You can really do just about anything.

I wanted to make mine into puppets so I added a straw (you can add a popsicle stick) to the bottom of the fish.

Happy Crafting,
Kristin
